A little about yours truly...
Hi, hello, and welcome!
My name is Alix Maffin-Pirie. I am an enthusiastic teacher, proud Firefighter's wife, rescue-dog mama, and life long learner.
I knew from a young age I wanted to be a teacher. Perhaps playing "classroom" in my basement should have been the first clue that I had found my calling! I attended the University of Guelph to study English Literature and History and went to Wilfrid Laurier University for teachers college from 2013-2014. Throughout my educational journey, I worked with and attended seminars regarding students with exceptionalities as I was (and still am) a student with an exceptionality myself. I understand that each learner is following their own path and that not every student learns the same way. Fairness doesn't mean everyone gets the same thing, it means everyone gets what they need to succeed.
I love to read, travel, and learn. I think that school sometimes earns a bad reputation as a place where creativity and inquiry are not welcome. In my class, I hope that students feel their inquisitive minds and creative sides can really shine through.
I'm not saying I am a perfect educator, because I know for a fact I am not. I'm always learning and trying out new things. Sometimes I find a lesson completely bombs, which I know can be discouraging, but it's important for us to continue to try to expand our growth mindset. My purpose for this blog is that sometimes colleagues of mine ask me about the things I do in class, and in turn I ask them to share their incredible ideas. I'd love to have a space to send some friends to show them the great learning that is happening in my classroom! Parents are welcome to follow along with our learning, too!
